Today in MLB History: Gibson Goes Deep Twice

We lost another Hall of Famer over the weekend. Bob Gibson, flamethrower for the Cardinals, died at 84. Gibson, who won two Cy Young Awards and threw 56 career shutouts, was one of baseball’s most dominating and intimidating pitchers.

On this day in October, 6 1968, Bob Gibson went deep in Game 7 of last year’s Fall Classic to become the first pitcher to hit two home runs in World Series history. Gibson hammered the long-ball off Detroit’s Joe Sparma leading off the fourth inning of Game 4 in the Cardinals’ 10-1 rout at Tiger Stadium. Oriole southpaw Dave McNally will match the mark with round-trippers in the 1969 and 1970 series.

Here are some of Bob Gibson’s most popular baseball cards.
